White-crowned sparrow

White-crowned sparrow

An estimated 4,000 twitchers made the journey to Cley next the Sea for a glimpse of this White-crowned Sparrow,(pic Rupert Pye) January 2008 and was the 4th UK record for this species. In the process more than £3,000 was raised in donations to the village's 13th century Church of St Margaret of Antioch - believed to be the largest sum ever raised for charity following a rare bird appearance.
"It's normal wherever a rare bird appears for donations to a local charity but usually the rarity vanishes before much has been collected", explained Mr Bending, 60, a retired clergyman.
"But as a result of the sparrow's extended stay the donations have kept flowing and I am advised that as a result this is the most that has ever been raised in this way.
"The money is going into the local church's restoration fund - and it is most welcome as significant amounts of money are always needed to keep it in good repair."
