Northumberland & Tyneside Bird Club

Northumberland & Tyneside Bird Club

The Northumberland and Tyneside Bird Club was founded in 1958. Membership is open to anybody with a beneficial interest in ornithology. The club aims to provide members with news of local ornithological interest through monthly bulletins, the annual report for the area, Birds in Northumbria, and other occasional publications.
The club also undertakes to encourage and instruct members in various ornithological activities by means of indoor meetings, between September and April, and Field Outings throughout the year. Click here for more details

Natural History Society of Northumbria

Natural History Society of Northumbria

The museum was opened in 1884 but some of its collections date from the 18th century and new material is constantly being added. There are many items of national and international importance including numerous type specimens and important ethnographic specimens, especially from Oceania. The collections of fossils and of birds are particularly rich but the whole field of natural history is covered. Since the 1950s the museum and collections have been leased to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and in recent years it has been managed on their behalf by Tyne & Wear Museums. The Society continues to contribute to the management and several members act as volunteer assistant curators. Members have free entry to the museum (or reduced admission rates during special exhibitions).

Conservation and Research
The Society undertakes active conservation in its reserve in Gosforth Park and is also represented on numerous committees concerned with the conservation and protection of the region’s wildlife. It is also involved in active research, particularly bird-ringing, and the publication of research findings in both its regular and special publications.

Gosforth Park Nature Reserve
The Society manages a nature reserve in Gosforth Park which has a shallow lake, extensive reedbeds and mixed woodlands. Hides and board walks enable members to view waterfowl, migrating waders, reed-bed birds and a wide range of woodland birds and mammals. The reserve has a large population of roe deer and a thriving community of red squirrels.
