L68-91cm. Usually much larger than Black-throated diver (although there is some overlap in sizes). Much larger head with steep forehead and heavier more powerful looking bill.On water the Great Northern Diver appears elongated with its head held horizontally (White billed diver carries head held upwards as in Red -throated).In all plumages the white 'neckband ' is usually visible distinguishing it from Black throated.Usually solitary it can often be close inshore (especially on West coast of Scotland Mull, Arran etc Dec- May. Occasionally seen inland on reservoirs. Largest numbers off the Northern and Western Isles of Scotland and also the Cornish coast.The Common Loon is the national bird of Canada and is depicted on the Canadian one-dollar coin.
