L56 - 73cm.Slightly larger than Red throated diver with thicker neck. Sits low in water .Black throat pattern diagnostic with b/w checkered pattern to back similar to Great Northern Diver.Also appears black and white in winter plumage but far more distinct than Red throated Diver.Also displays white to the flanks much higher up than Red throated.(similar to male Eider).
winters on coastal waters with bays, spending most time fairly close to shore.
Moray Firth and W coast of Scotland best sites, as well as the NE and SW coasts of England. Sometimes seen at inland reservoirs.
