Biebrza Marshes

Unique in Europe for its marshes and peatlands, as well as its highly diversified fauna, especially birds- Biebrza National Park was designated as a wetland site of global significance under the protection of the RAMSAR Convention.
Situated in in the far north-east of Poland, Biebrza Marshes are one of the largest in Europe., Stretching almost 100km they are a protected and a designated National Park. The marshes benefited greatly from non-intensive farming during the communist era and remain a wonderful birding destination. The river Biebrza meanders slowly through miles of birch-thickets, reedbeds, wet meadows, alders and peatbog providing ideal habitat for rare birds such as great snipe pictured (about 450 lekking males) and aquatic warbler. In the spring flooding season the marshes are teaming with migrating wildfowl, cranes, waders and terns. This is also a fabulous area for raptors (one of the best in Europe) with Black Kite, Red Kite, Montagu''s Harrier, Marsh Harrier, Common Buzzard, Hobby, Great Spotted Eagle, Steppe Eagle, White-Tailed Eagle, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Short-Eared Owl, and Eagle owl.
