9km north-east of Buttevant, Cork.Size: 21 hectares
Habitat: Kilcolman Wildfowl Refuge is an attractive limestone fen. The reserve is managed by a scientific advisory committee in agreement with the owner, Margaret Ridgway. Habitats include freshwater, reedbeds and scrub. It is most important for its flora (150 species recorded to date).

Birds & wildlife: Important for wildfowl throughout the year. It hosts Whooper Swans, Bewick's Swans, Greenland White-fronted Geese (their only site in Cork) and a selection of dabbling and diving ducks, eg Gadwall, Shoveler, Pintail, Pochard. Up to 1,000 Wigeon and 1,200-1,500 Teal occur in mid-winter. Thirteen waterbirds breed, including Shoveler. Rarities have included Bluethroat (in summer), Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Richard's Pipit, Little Ringed Plover.

Visiting & access: The owner, Margaret Ridgway (Tel. 022-24200) should be contacted prior to visiting. There are two observation hides on the reserve.
